[John Cage Year Bydgoszcz 2012]
The main aim of project "John Cage Year Bydgoszcz 2012" is to introduce, to people living in Bydgoszcz and its surroundings, the character of one of the greatests composers od the 20th century, who at the same time, became one of the most controversial characters of contemporary culutre. Through presentation of John Cage's works and all non-musical activity we would like to encourage the participants of our project to accept experimental and innovative challenges, what I believe, to be the only approach that can provide development in every aspect of life.
The object of this initiative is not only to get to know the artist. It is essential that through presentation of his works and parts of his activity we can draw the participants' attention to the possibility of taking uncoventional actions in the field of art but also in everyday life.
By creating this project aroundthe art of one of the greatest innovators in music and thinkers of 20th century, we are hoping to express a certain idea concerning the city. We would like Bydgoszcz to become a city known for being open to new ideas and bold people who are willing to risk and take actions that reach beyond standards keeping us in the comfort zone of preset rules. We would like to achieve this thanks to international and all-Polish promotion, guests visiting during the festival and documentation created during the realisation of the project.
This project includes the participation of local artists, especially students of The Music Academy and other performers who normally do not take up other areas of art.
The project contains following events and activities:
- a series of concerts of Polish and foreign performers (including worldwide known musicians) presenting composer's works
- presentation of films about the artist and recordings of outstanding renditions of his works
- mixed media presentations showing the capabilities of simultaneous experiment on sound and image
- lectures, given by experts in the matter, dedicated to the composer and the idea which he represented
- experimental music workshop and ''merging contemporary music with visual art'' workshop (a special part of the project will be dedicated to children and youth)
